When dealing with an addiction or a loved one who is struggling with an addiction, it can feel overwhelming to find the addiction treatment perfect for you or your loved one. There are a number of various addiction treatment programs and no single program will work for every person. By understanding the different options available, you will have an easier time with the decision process. Below you will find the different methods of treating substance abuse.
Inpatient Addiction Treatment
When an individual participates in an inpatient addiction treatment, they stay in a residential setting for the duration of their treatment. This allows them to escape everyday life, temptations, and triggers in order for them to focus solely on their recovery. The treatment services you can expect include detox, individual therapy, medical supervision, group therapy, 12-step meetings, recreation, and other activities. Furthermore, there are two different types of inpatient addiction treatment, including:
- Executive inpatient programs: this program is more lavish with more privacy and the option to continue working while they’re at the facility.
- Luxury residential treatment: this treatment is a more lavish experience and includes amenities such as a pool, spa, yoga classes and sometimes acupuncture.
Outpatient Addiction Treatment
This treatment allows individuals to continue living at home while they receive addiction treatment. This treatment requires regular check-ins and it’s necessary for patients to be self-motivated and committed to recovery. For those who have a history of relapse or have medical abuse issues may find this type of treatment challenging. Additionally, there are two further options with outpatient addiction treatment:
- Intensive outpatient program (IOP): This option is for individuals who benefit from a structured program. This type of program meets multiple times a week for therapy and counseling in order to prevent relapse.
- Partial hospitalization program (PHP): This program is where individuals check in weekly at a hospital for medical monitoring and treatment. PHP focuses on the stability of patients with medical needs, something that a regular outpatient program cannot do.
The 12-step program is probably the most popular addiction treatment program. It is a free recovery program that is organized by former substance users. The program focuses on building a community of support and embrace spirituality while working through each of the 12 steps. The programs that are modeled after the 12-step philosophy are Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and Nar-Anon.
Detox centers help individuals during the detoxification stage of their addiction treatment. Detox is the part of recovery that clears the substance out of the body and is the first step toward recovery. Withdrawal symptoms usually occur during detox and can range from minor discomfort to life-threatening symptoms. Detoxification is medically supervised 24/7 to ensure the safety of individuals during detox.
This treatment can help patients manage their withdrawal symptoms and cravings. This allows a person who is addicted to a more intense drug, such as opiates, to withdraw from it safely. Some medications have special properties to prevent abuse of the drug themselves.
